Prologue

Prologue
--------

Molly never gave much thought to the angel wings behind her back.  They had been with her her whole life, never hidden, always in plain view of anyone who cared to take a glance.  At first her parents objected to the whole idea of wings, after all--what chance at a normal life could she possibly have?  But she was in fact their little angel and the wings upon her shoulders proved that.  And she did have a very normal life.  Her very best friend in the world was the girl that everyone loved but was afraid of and on the first day of preschool she let everyone know that Molly was not a freak to be gawked at and mocked, but a human to be loved and respected.  In fact, Ashley made it a point that none of the kids in her class got bullied or teased for any reason, and for that reason alone, that school was the friendliest school in the whole state.

It started with two young kids and a dream.  Violet and John were in their mid 20's and had met in high school and had been best friends but had lost touch since then.  Molly knew they were perfect for each other and would be the best parents to her, so all she had to do was wait for the right moment to reunite them so they could start falling in love and getting pregnant.  It didn't take very long for Molly to be on her way, it was a cosmic match up of perfect night, perfect day in Violet's cycle, and a night of unbridled passion.

She first felt the baby at 3 weeks. It wasn't a kick so much as it was more of a nudge. Everyone thought she was crazy -- babies don't kick until at least 4 to 5 months.  Even the one doctor she bothered going to said she was farther along than she thought she was.  But she wasn't fooled by whatever nonsense the doctor was trying to shove down her throat.  She knew how far along she was. She knew exactly when she conceived her baby and she knew that her baby was special.  Even more of a miracle than most.

The first ultrasound photo proved to be something awe-inspiring.  Within that first picture of her baby she could see herself and her husband inside the baby, but she could also see something else -- tiny wings.  She at first had chosen to have the baby at a hospital before each doctor she went to tried to make her abort her "demon baby."  She put up with it at first to get the ultrasound, but after that she went in search of the perfect midwife, one who would understand her situation.  Plus, having the baby at home had its benefits.  She wouldn't have to worry about anyone doing anything to her child.  And that's what felt exactly right for her.

Labor did not come easy for her.  She dropped at 6 months, and the midwife, although extremely open minded, was still a little surprised that this baby was coming so early. But she insisted that she was going to deliver the child, that it was okay and as she looked into her husband's scared and frantic eyes she simply kissed him softly and whispered in his ear to trust her, and to please hold her hand and be there with her as she delivered their baby.  John stood there holding her hand and he did not break eye contact with her as she pushed and pushed until he heard a baby cry.  That was when she knew everything was okay, that Molly was alive and so was she.  They both had made it.
The midwife smiled as she handed Violet her newborn baby.  Violet looked down and saw the exact face she had seen many times in her dreams and in visions.  John wrapped his arms around both mother and daughter and kissed them both on their foreheads.  He counted 10 fingers, 10 toes, and two very remarkable angel wings, all pink and newborn as well. Molly was wrapped up like a little burrito in her recieving blanket, and as soon as she looked up at her father, John was gone.  He knew this baby had him wrapped around his finger for the rest of his life.

"she's just so beautiful," Violet exclaimed.  "so beautiful," as Molly cooed and stared up into her mother's eyes and smiled.

With that statement she felt a heaviness in her eyelids that she finally gave into.  John tried taking Molly from her to give her a chance to rest, but even in sleep she held onto that baby for dear life.  After everything she had been through with every doctor trying to snatch her baby away, even though she trusted John with her life, she wasn't going to be apart from Molly.  Not until she was certain that this was all real and that no one was going to take her baby away from her.

Molly got comfortable in her mother's arms.  She was glad her mom didn't let John take her away yet.  She wasn't ready to be apart from Violet.  She could still remember where she had come from, could even remember being born.  Right now she just wanted to remember everything about this moment: how little she was, how pink her wings were, her mother's heartbeat, her dad checking in on them every 2 minutes.  No matter where life took her, she would always remember this as her happy place. She would take this with her wherever she went.  And with that thought, she finally drifted off into sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Molly grew up to be a beautiful young lady.  Of course the media went a bit nuts: "baby born with angel wings, real or hoax?"  She got a ton of letters every day, some really beautiful and inspiring notes and others filled with hate and ignorance.  She wrote everyone back, including the haters, saying "thank you for writing me.  I will pray for you."  She didn't want to be famous, but it couldn't be helped.  She had wings.  She had to have clothes specially made to accommodate her growth pattern, both humanly and angelically.  Yes, she was an angel sent from God to set the world on fire -- in a good way.  She was sent the way she was because He didn't want her to be ashamed of who she really was and because he knew her parents would love her and support her no matter what form she came in.  The doctors were all confounded, they had never seen a real life pair of angel wings on a human baby before.  And as much as they wanted to test her, they had to respect the wishes of the parents to have her left alone.  She was treated like any other growing child -- except she had the immune system grown adults would literally kill for so it's not even like she needed a doctor.  But in order to go to school with everyone else, she needed to get checked out just like everyone else.  And she didn't mind.  She loved being treated like an equal.
Molly never cared too much about what people thought of her.  She knew she was special, but she didn't go around flaunting her specialness around and waving it in everyone's faces.  She really and truly cared for people and wanted to get to know them.  Sometimes she would get stares from people who were just interested in her wings and sometimes people would whisper, but instead of letting them get to her she would let the people staring at her touch her wings and she would ask the people who were whispering what they were saying and if they had any questions she would answer them. She didn't believe in secrets -- she believed in putting the whole truth out there for anyone to grab.  She didn't really know what to think of lying, it was a concept lost on her.  She did know that if she was going to own her wings, she would have to endure the backlash of people afraid of her.  But she didn't have to stand alone -- she had the full support of her family, her friends, and even the whole town in which she lived.  It wasn't a big town, but it was big enough to fit everyone who loved Molly and wanted to support her.  And that was good enough for her.
